Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Competitors are granted the ability to contest particular calls made by the official, echoing the practice currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
