A shadow economy for unlicensed slimming medications is being driven by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, according to new investigations.
Investigational Drug Gaining Traction Online
The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its alleged fat-burning properties. Followers are encouraged to contact these profiles directly for supplier links, while also receiving promotional offers.
Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Additionally, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and assertions of next-day UK delivery. Sellers market the substance there before directing customers to other platforms for purchases.
Learning About Retatrutide
Retatrutide is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could help individuals lose up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Voice Concerns
Nevertheless, doctors and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users injecting substances of uncertain source.
Some professionals stated the demand for the experimental drug could be connected to the increasing price of licensed slimming treatments such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Status and Implementation
Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or distributed for human use under the British medical regulations.
Some influencers try to sidestep the rules by calling to the substance as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted drug, but advertising and supply can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer laws, potentially leading to fines, legal action or prison.
Platform Response and Material Elimination
According to TikTok, the platform has taken down problematic material and prohibited associated keywords and query recommendations. The company said it was dedicated to maintaining the service secure and investing in enhancing compliance measures.
Digital Trading Activities
Research also found groups with up to 9,000 members marketing retatrutide using the platform's integrated discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up channels with thousands of members, populated with photos of weight loss, glowing testimonials and detailed instructions for preparing or injecting at home.
After moments of joining one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where most purchases take place. The vendor sent an instruction manual and guaranteed shipping within two days. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None asked about weight, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Information and Pricing
Within these communities, messages show dark colored packages with postal service labels, stating to contain new batches. One message read: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens usually sold at £160 for 20 milligrams. When asked how much time a pen should be used, vendors give conflicting answers ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Service Oversight and Safety Actions
A spokesperson for Telegram stated it actively monitored harmful material on its platform including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company noted that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Expert Cautions
“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Although the science behind this drug is sound, these online products may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmaceutical services at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to current cost increases for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You can’t be certain what’s contained or whether the conditions they were made in was sterile,” she explained.
Her staff has already encountered patients injured by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your health,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Position
A representative from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority globally. “Consequently at this point no one can sell [it] for personal consumption,” they explained, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly experimental product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially serious health risks”.
