Our Leading Album of the Year: The Artist's Lux Secures the Number One Spot.

Initially, this work may look more like a challenging scholarly quiz than the latest popular music album by a musician whose previous hit was a collaboration with an international pop star. Split into 4 different parts and performed in 13 tongues, we have a head-spinning orchestral-influenced opus exploring feminine mystery, religious transcendence, and bodily transformation, frequently through the lens of various female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched upwards here, carried by the constant sound of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning composer among a vast list of contributors. Its sheer daring alone makes the efforts of other artists look rather small.

Transcending Academic Pretense

That this album succeeds in transcend dry intellectual posturing feels nearly miraculous, and sole credit belonging to Rosalía. Although it's not her first album to alchemize historical sounds and the present, the ambitions are far greater on Lux, and the balancing act more pronounced. The element that really elevates her fourth release, outside of its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be a core sense of fun. Much like the legendary artist during her peak, there is a captivating sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls the listener into its whirlwind. When she's breaking your heart apart, you nevertheless want to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Exuberance

That playful energy shines clearly during the stirring piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a sorrowful melancholy over several moments. Suddenly, all the music falls silent, to reveal there's a spontaneous laugh and a declaration before a hilariously exaggerated orchestral crescendo crashes in with comedic impact. The track then shifts into the wild track featuring galloping strings, an imposing choral group, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic with this album lies in the listener never quite know—nor wish to know—what it will go next."

Almost every song finishes at a totally distinct point from where it began. A track explores the transient nature of celebrity over a delicate orchestration before collapsing into digital cacophony. Another, a cut that recalls the artist's earlier trap-infused style starts out moody and sinister, with menacing vocals, before sudden traditional rhythms and a heavenly chorus enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement of the album involves straddling the line of bold innovation and broad accessibility. It is little surprise that the album has become the artist's highest-charting release to crack the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. A song sung entirely in English builds around a refrain that feels to gather more and more nagging hooks while it spirals skyward. This feat gets repeated by another powerful ballad that grows and contracts, intertwining multiple melodies as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused song seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and an anthemic hook.
  • In its words, it shares with cultural honesty of other breakup songs, eviscerating a former lover described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals have a sharp edge, akin to a fairy-tale character concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Feast for the Ears

Lux is popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious reach for capital-A artistry in an era of looming AI-generated sameness. It eschews solipsism in favor of glorious transcendence, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its own built-in excess. It is a deep well of hidden gems that takes patience to fully explore but never seem like hard work. While other big releases of 2025 seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish banquet at which the characters around it, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit between discussions about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking sadness, and common gossip about hopeless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary musical from pop's truly restlessly creative visionary.
