An defense official has revealed that the MoD is currently looking into the possible security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been told to refrain from discussing secret matters in any vehicles.
Security Guidance for MoD Staff
In a recently aired interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about secret material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He said that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that security is a issue in all modern cars.
We have a collection of tens of thousands of vehicles in the MoD and Chinese ones account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a secret level in any vehicle, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to restrict those confidential talks in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using all cars from China, the minister replied: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
This revelation comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese electric buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel was reportedly directing lasers at RAF pilots, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
The broader defence environment highlights the significance of strong measures and caution in all aspects of official operations, including vehicle use to communication habits.
