EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
