Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, seeking to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to federal court, targets the redistricting plan championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
